Who we are

Root & Thrive is a community-based nonprofit built on the belief that everyone deserves meaningful opportunities to learn, work, and belong — especially during seasons of transition.

We exist to support adults who face barriers to employment, independence, and community participation. This includes individuals with disabilities, individuals impacted by substance use disorders or in recovery, and others navigating life changes that make traditional pathways harder to access.

Root & Thrive provides vocational rehabilitation, life skills training, and supported employment in a structured, welcoming environment. Our programming focuses on building practical skills, confidence, routine, and connection — the foundations of long-term stability. A key part of our model includes a small, supported café and training space that offers real-world work experience alongside coaching and individualized support.

We believe growth happens best when people are seen for their strengths, supported where they are, and given space to try, learn, and thrive. Root & Thrive is intentionally designed to be inclusive, trauma-informed, and community-centered, meeting people where they are and walking alongside them as they build skills for the future.

Meet the Founder

Laurel Bartos, Founder

Root & Thrive was founded by Laurel Bartos, an educator and community advocate with a deep passion for supporting individuals during times of transition.

Through her work in education and her personal experiences with family members impacted by disability, substance use, and barriers to independence, Laurel saw firsthand the gap that often exists after formal schooling ends. Too often, individuals are left without meaningful structure, employment opportunities, or continued support — not because they lack ability, but because the systems around them fall short.

Root & Thrive grew out of Laurel’s desire to create something different: a place rooted in dignity, patience, and possibility. A space where people can build real skills, gain confidence through meaningful work, and feel connected to their community.

Laurel believes strongly in collaboration, listening, and learning from the community. Root & Thrive is not just her vision — it is shaped by the voices, experiences, and strengths of the people it serves.
